Corneal ulceration accounts for a large majority of our patients and they present with winking and sore eyes. It can be quite acute and sore, so we would recommend an examination as soon as you notice a problem.
Ulcers can be caused by a variety of conditions, not just trauma (running through undergrowth!) but also eyelid abnormalities, extra hairs, tear film problems (dry eye) or immune mediated diseases.
Most patient require topical treatment, but some may require surgery in order to repair the cornea. Wearing of an Elizabethan collar is essential to prevent patient interference (the cone of shame) and help speed up healing.
If you notice an increase in blinking or closing of your pets eye, do give your vet a call and organise an appointment as soon as possible.
